Marianne Kroemer passed away on November 14, 2024

Prof. Marianne Kroemer, born in 1929 in Bruck an der Mur, Austria, passed away on November 14, 2024. A distinguished violinist and pedagogue, she was a pioneering force in the field of instrumental education. In 1972, she founded the European String Teachers Association (ESTA) in Graz, creating a platform that significantly advanced the internationalization and professionalization of string teaching. Marianne’s teaching career commenced in 1949 at the municipal music school in Kapfenberg. She also taught at the Odilieninstitut in Graz and the Johann-Joseph-Fux Conservatory of Styria. In 1964, she joined the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz (KUG), where she served for 33 years, eventually becoming a full professor of violin. Her tenure at KUG was marked by her dedication to research-based instrumental pedagogy and her commitment to nurturing young talent. In recognition of her contributions, Marianne was honored during the 50th anniversary of ESTA in 2022 with the Medal of Honour from the city of Graz and a national award.

Marianne Kroemer’s legacy endures through the countless students she mentored and the international community of string educators she helped to unite. Her passion for music and education has left an indelible mark on the world of string teaching. Professor Marianne Kroemer’s name will be gratefully remembered as long as our organisation exists.
