The 46th ESTA International Conference took place in Malta from Tuesday 10th to Saturday 14th April 2018.

The theme of the Conference was "Cross-Strings II" which was a reminder of the 33rd ESTA International Conference of 2005 which was held in Malta and had "Cross-Strings" as a theme.
On Monday 9 th April, a pre-conference 5-hour Colourstrings Workshop by Geza Szilvay was attended by participants who arrived in Malta a day early.
The venues were the lecture rooms and theatre of the Catholic Institute Floriana and the nearby Robert Samut Hall, which which belongs to the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra.
The Foyer of the Catholic Institute served as the Exhibition Hall and also housed the Conference Desk.
The evening of Tuesday 10 th saw the Official Opening of the Conference and Exhibition amid a reception held at the Catholic Institiute, which was followed by the first concert at the RobertSamut Hall.

The Presidents' Meeting took place at the Piano Room of the Catholic Institiute on Wednesday 11th at 9:30am and the Delegates Meeting at the same place on Friday 13th at 9:00am.

Wolfgang Klos: Viola masterclass with emphasis on studies – focussed on Lilian Fuchs Etudes with the participation of Andjela Sibinovic
Karl Peter Schöning: Cello Masterclass
Mauro Tortorelli: Violin Masterclass

The Concerts Were:
Gjorgji Cincievski: Different phases in Bottesini’s compositions for the double bass: (a lecture – recital) with the participation of Reggie Clews (violin) and Michelle Scicluna (piano)
Steve Bingham: Lines and loops
Eylem Arica, Ebru Ayata, Filiz Kaya: Traditional and contemporary Turkish music for strings
Karl Peter Schoening: (at St. Lawrence Church Birgu) with Oskar Valeberg and Titus Johansson
Reuben Pace: Listening to Orpheus Today (clarinet plus String Trio)
Eva Belvelin: Scandinavian Strings
The Closing Concert was that of the ESTA Chamber Orchestra. Conductor: Jutta Seppinen
Responsible were: Kjell-Oke Hamren, Artistic advisor; Katarzyna Theus, Logistic and administration [KLANGFORUM SCHWEIZ]; an idea of Werner Schmitt.

Apart from the pre-conference Colourstrings workshop, the following workshops took place:
Marlies Muijzers: Workshop: musical expression
ESTA Italia Playday Team, Conductor: Simone Genuini: A whole day workshop was organised by the PLAYDAY Team of with cooperation of ESTA Malta. The Conference participants were able to witness the conclusion at the Catholic Institute Theatre.

The Cultural Programe:
The Excursion on Friday 13 th was graced with beautiful weather: the ferry across the harbour led to the old town Birgu and included a tour of Fort St. Angelo, whiich in medieval times was the home of the count of Malta and became in 1531 the citadel of the Knights of the Order of t. John that later withstood one of the most ferocious sieges in history.
At 8:45pm on Friday, the participants filled the historic Casino Maltese in the geographial centre of Valletta for a memorableGala Dinner.
On Saturday before lunch-time Alfred Tonna, the retired cellist of the National Orchestra led a tour of St. Publius Church, describing the World War II bombing and reconstruction and explaning the riches contained therein. - the conference having taken place in the precint of the current feast of St.Publius, first bishop of Malta.
